Azusa Resident, Citrus College Graduate Receives Scholarship
by Rachel White

When Azusa resident Jesus “Jesse” Sanchez begins his junior year of college this fall it will be at his “dream” university:  U.C. Berkeley.

Sanchez, who was named Citrus College Man of the Year, graduated from Citrus College this past June.  He is also the recipient of a $500 Dr. Bill May Scholarship.

“My goal is to acquire my Ph.D. in sociology and become a research professor,” Sanchez said.

At one time, that goal would have seemed impossible.  Sanchez comes from a low-income, single-parent household.  He is the first person in his family to attend college, and he struggles with a learning disability.

“When I graduated from high school, I was ineligible to attend a university and unsure of what I wanted to do with my life,” he admitted.  “Now, I’ve graduated from Citrus College and I am transferring to the top-ranked school of sociology in the nation.”

Sanchez said he was elated and honored when he learned he would receive a scholarship from the Citrus College Foundation.

“Any positive affirmation that I receive from Citrus College is such an honor because I have a deep love and appreciation for this college and I am proud to be part of the Citrus College family,” he said.

As Sanchez begins his studies at U.C. Berkeley, he reflects back on his time at Citrus and the impact it had on his life.

“Every time I took a Citrus College course, it changed the way I viewed the world around me,” Sanchez said.  “I have become enlightened.  Citrus has been instrumental in making me a passionate and conscious global citizen committed to fulfilling my potential and optimizing my service to others.”
