Covina Resident Receives Citrus College Scholarship

by Rachel White

Angel Cruz, a resident of Covina, is the recipient of a $150 Readers to Leaders Scholarship from the Citrus College Foundation.

“When I learned I would be receiving this scholarship, my initial reaction was, ‘Wow!  I really need this money for next semester’s text books,’” he said.

Cruz describes herself as a hard working, middle class student who struggles to pay for college.

“I have many obstacles to overcome,” he said.  “One that I have had to face that many students can relate to is money.  Not having the income to pay for an education is one of the worst feelings in the world.”

Cruz points to the California’s current economic crisis as a reason why scholarships are more important than ever in helping students reach their educational goals.

“Scholarships motivate students to do well in school and maintain good grades,” Cruz said.  “They take a burden off the backs of students.”

Reflection back upon how her life has changed since enrolling at Citrus, Cruz said he has undergone a dramatic transformation.

“I came in with nothing, and I’m leaving with a whole lot,” he said.  “Citrus College has truly been a positive and enriching experience.”

Cruz is transferring to Cal Poly Pomona.  His goals include earning a master’s degree in counseling.
