Citrus College Haugh Performing Arts Center to Host Popular “Battle of the Big Bands” Event

by Stacy Armstrong

Citrus College and Azusa Pacific University boast world-renown music departments with talented students and outstanding faculty.  But whose band is better?

One of the region’s most anticipated events, “Battle of the Big Bands,” will seek to answer this question.  During this popular performance, the Citrus College Blue Note Swing Orchestra, led by Bob Slack, dean of fine and performing arts, will face off against the Azusa Pacific University Jazz Orchestra, led by David Beatty, director of commercial music.

This crowd-pleasing competition will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20 in the Citrus College Haugh Performing Arts Center.

“This collaborative event brings two great groups together to create a fun musical experience.  It is a great show that promotes a friendly rivalry between two excellent jazz programs,” Slack says.  “Our goal is to see that the audience has fun, gains an appreciation for Big Band Jazz, and helps spread the word about the two high-caliber college music programs that exist in the San Gabriel Valley.”

Tickets for this popular event sell out quickly!  General admission is $15, senior admission is $13, and student admission is $10.
