Glendora Resident Serves as Official Student Host of Citrus College
by Rachel White

Glendora resident Austin Sefton is currently serving as a Citrus College Student Ambassador.

The 19-year-old joins eight other students who have been serving in this elite position since the start of the fall 2009 semester.

“The Citrus College Student Ambassador Program is comprised of a select group of knowledgeable, motivated and enthusiastic students with specialized skills who work together as a team to represent Citrus College in a variety of activities,” said Ivon McCraven, coordinator of the Student Ambassador Program.

“I want to help people see that Citrus has helped me and is capable of helping them as well,” Sefton said.  “I want others to know about all the resources available to them.”

Sefton’s role as a student ambassador includes escorting students on campus tours, staff booths at college fairs, speaking at local high schools and representing Citrus College at community events.

“I can hopefully inspire other students with my story and experiences so people can see that they too can succeed,” Sefton said.  “Citrus College is a second chance at an education.  If you come to Citrus College with determination you will leave with an associate degree, a certificate in a technical career, or ready to competitively transfer to a top university.”

Sefton admits that before he enrolled at Citrus, he was skeptical of a community college education.

“I thought that the resources for me to succeed would be limited,” he said.  “I was wrong.  I really enjoy the professors because they are dedicated to their jobs.  The free tutoring for all subjects has helped build my grade point average.  The Math Success Center has given me renewed confidence in math.”

Sefton, who is a member of the national honor society Alpha Gamma Sigma, plans to continue his education at a four-year university.
