Glendora Resident Serves as Official Student Host of Citrus College
by Rachel White
Glendora resident Vanessa Alvarez is currently serving as a Citrus College Student Ambassador.
The 19-year-old communications major joins eight other students who have been serving in this elite position since the start of the fall 2009 semester.
“The Citrus College Student Ambassador Program is comprised of a select group of knowledgeable, motivated and enthusiastic students with specialized skills who work together as a team to represent Citrus College in a variety of activities,” said Ivon McCraven, coordinator of the Student Ambassador Program.
“As a student ambassador my confidence has been enhanced tremendously,” Alvarez said. “I’ve learned to work with a variety of people and improve my public speaking skills in the process.”
Alvarez’ role as a student ambassador includes escorting students on campus tours, staffing booths at college fairs, speaking at local high schools, and representing Citrus College at community events.
“This program is important because it is so helpful to students,” said Alvarez. “We bring a welcoming attitude to college life and introduce a lot of much needed information. There are so many opportunities open to Citrus students.”
Alvarez has taken advantage of many college opportunities herself, including serving as vice president of Alpha Gamma Sigma, a national honor society, and working with the Citrus College Latina Leadership Network.
Alvarez said she decided to enroll at Citrus College after high school because it was near her home, affordable, and she was unsure of her major.
“I wanted to take things slow my first year of college,” she admitted. “I now would tell others that Citrus is definitely underestimated. Anything you want to achieve in life, whether its next month or next year, is made possible, or at least easier, by attending Citrus.”
Alvarez’ goals include transferring to USC, earning a degree in broadcast journalism, and becoming a television personality.
