According to the U.S. Department of Labor, "job opportunities for teachers over the next 10 years will vary from good to excellent." California will need an estimated 197,000* teachers to replace those who will retire.

Although salaries vary among school districts, in 2008, the median annual salary for elementary school teachers was $58,677; for secondary school teachers, $62,779. Some teachers receive extra pay and bonuses for advanced degrees or for involvement in their school's extracurricular activities. benefits include health insurance and retirement benefits.
