Preparing to Use the Adapted Testing Service
- When you meet with your DSP&S Counselor at the beginning of the semester to register or discuss your schedule, be sure to tell him/her about your desire to use the Adapted Testing Service. He/she will provide an "Adapted Testing Certification." Make sure you understand the accommodations you will be using.
- Visit the Testing Center to become acquainted with the policies and procedures for using the service. Meet the staff in the Testing Center and keep their telephone number on hand so that you may call them directly if necessary.
- Introduce yourself to your instructors and discuss your intentions of using the Adapted Testing Service. *It is strongly recommended that you inform your instructors at the beginning of the semester. Present your certification as evidence of your eligibility. Explain that you are a student with a verified disability receiving services through the DSP&S Department and that you will be using the Adapted Testing Service. You may want to have your DSP&S Counselor's telephone number for referral in case the instructor has questions you cannot answer.
- If you are unsure of how to discuss your disability or how much information to disclose, make an appointment with your DSP&S Counselor to discuss your options.
What to Do When You Find Out About a Test
Please inform the Adapted Testing staff if you are using the service for the first time. Always notify the testing center at least 5 business days before the test is to be given in class. Call or visit the Testing Center to have the staff fill out a Student Test Request Form. Be sure you know the following information when requesting an exam: (refer to your student printout)
- Course title and number (Example: Math 149, Intermediate Algebra II).
- Instructor's name (correctly spelled).
- The day and time the class will take the test.
- The accommodation(s) you are requesting.
Timing is critical to getting your test to the office on the day and at the time you have scheduled.
If you have more than 5 days notice, please give the office more notice, too.
On the Day of the Test
- Make sure you have all the materials you will need, including scantrons, pencils, blue books, and other approved items.
- Remember to take care of personal needs prior to checking in at the Testing Center. Breaks are not part of the testing procedures. If a break becomes critical, test materials will remain in the testing room. A staff member may accompany the student on a break. A notation of the time and duration of the break will be made.
- Arrive at the scheduled testing time in the Testing Center. (If you are late, time is deducted from your testing time.)
- If a student has a question about a test question or problem, Testing Center staff will attempt to answer it. If the instructor can be contacted, the staff member will do so. You or the staff member may also include a note when returning the exam regarding the nature of your question.
- After completing the test, the student will leave the test with the Testing Center staff. Scratch paper will be collected. The test will be returned to the instructor. The time returned will be logged.
Special Situations
- CANCELLATIONS - Please call early to notify the Testing Center of a cancellation. The seat saved for you may be needed for another student.
- IF YOU CANNOT KEEP YOUR SCHEDULED TESTING APPOINTMENT, please call as early as possible. The instructor must approve time changes or reschedules. You should always attempt to notify the instructor if you will be missing a scheduled testing time. Arriving late to testing is the same as arriving late to class.
- NO SHOWS - If a student does not call or come in at the scheduled testing time, the exam will be returned and the professor will be notified that the student was a "no show."
- FINALS - Please notify the office at least 3 weeks in advance of finals. Rooms are limited and need is great during this time.
- IF YOU ARE HAVING A PROBLEM IN CLASS - Occasionally a student will have a disability related problem that they cannot solve by themselves. If the student has attempted to solve the problem without success and feels he/she is in need of a liaison, the DSP&S counselor may be able to help. It is important to notify the counselor early before the problem becomes unsolvable.
- IF YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN LESS THANĀ 5 DAYS NOTICE OF A TEST - Come in or call immediately. Remind the instructor that you use the Adapted Testing Service and the Testing Center will need a copy of the test. A test request will be filled out and sent but additional contact with the instructor is usually necessary. The student's direct communication with the instructor will expedite the process.
