Journalism students earn awards, board seats at convention
Citrus College's journalism program continued its award-winning streak last month at a convention in Long Beach.
The team earned five individual and group awards, and two students were elected as members of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) board.
Four awards recognized articles published in the Clarion newspaper and Logos magazine in 2021, while the fifth came from an on-the-spot contest.
First-place winners at the ACP Spring National College Media Conference included Alana Daly O'Brien, who took home the top prize for a feature on Citrus College alumnus Harvey Guillen, the first queer Latinx actor nominated for a Critic's Choice Award. Ishika Muchhal won first place in the opinion category for her column on diversity in film.
In front page design, Lucy Argaez and Justin George placed fourth. Mark Snow got fourth place in the news photo category from an on-the-spot contest.
In addition to the individual awards, the Clarion's website received a "General Excellence" award, the highest honor an individual publication can win.
The good news didn't stop there.
Mr. Snow, who serves as the Clarion's managing editor, was elected as JACC's student president. Clarion Editor-in-Chief Anthony Rossi was also elected to the JACC board as a Southern California student representative.
Citrus College instructor and Clarion adviser Patrick Schmiedt praised his students and complimented Mr. Snow and Mr. Rossi for being appointed to the board, where only three students serve at a time.
