Continuing education successfully launches new noncredit certificates
Greg Torres never planned on becoming a drone operator. But when a continuing education schedule was mailed to his home in Claremont, he was intrigued by a new drone technology certificate program offered by Citrus College.
"I inherited a drone at work after someone left and didn't know what to do with it. When I saw the catalog I thought, 'Well, I'll ask and see if my work will support me through this,' and they did," Torres remembered. "Now, I realize there are all of these avenues for hobbyists and industries. So, I'm definitely in the 'I want to do this' category."
Drone technology was just one of the new noncredit certificates that was launched by the Citrus College Continuing Education Department in the fall of 2022. Introduction to American Sign Language, Human Resources Management, Introduction to Automotive Service, Introduction to Careers in Health, Medical Terminology, Small Business Management and English as a Second Language - Noncredit to Credit Transition are also new certificate offerings.
"Citrus College faculty from various disciplines developed the certificates during the 2021-2022 academic year, and they were offered for the first time during the summer 2022 session and fall 2022 semester," explained Ivon McCraven, director of continuing education. "These certificates are important stepping stones for underserved students to accomplish their individual goals. They help students build skills and serve as a bridge to credit classes, while also increasing access and equity for adult learners."
Designed to supplement a student's personal growth and professional proficiencies, noncredit classes are tuition free and open to all California residents. An academic counselor that specializes in noncredit education is available to help guide interested students through the process of setting goals, planning their educational futures and achieving success.
