STUDENT PUBLICATIONS RECEIVE RECOGNITIONS AT REGIONAL CONFERENCE

Citrus College was well represented at the recent regional conference of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC).

This year's event was held at Cerritos College on Saturday, October 29. It included a series of workshops from industry professionals and roundtable discussions with editors, as well as an on-the-spot and mail-in competition.

The Citrus College Clarion newspaper, The Clarion Online and Logos magazine were presented with top honors during the competition. At the same time, Citrus College student journalists won an additional 14 awards.

Evan Solano, Citrus College student and editor of Logos magazine, received seven individual honors. However, Solano says the fact that Logos magazine was given the General Excellence designation is what he found most meaningful.

"This was the first time in seven years that Citrus College's Logos magazine competed at a JACC conference," he explained. "I am very proud that the Logos staff took home General Excellence in its first semester back!"

In addition to a successful showing during the conference's competition, Citrus College also has a strong presence on the JACC Board of Directors that was instrumental in coordinating the annual event.

Patrick Schmiedt, communications faculty member and student newspaper advisor, serves as the Southern California faculty representative; Solano serves as the student representative; Waleed Rashidi, adjunct faculty member for Citrus College and California State University, Fullerton, serves as the four-year college representative; and Jorge Medina, Citrus College alumnus and professional journalist, serves as the industry representative on the board.

"The Citrus College Communications Program has a long history of distinction, and these recent accomplishments are a continuation of this legacy of success," said the college superintendent/president. "On behalf of the entire college community, I congratulate the students and staff of the college's student-run publications on their recent awards."
