Eleven student representatives from the Citrus College Clarion newspaper and Logos Magazine participated in the state Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) convention last week in Sacramento. The Citrus College team competed well against about 35 other community colleges from across the state, and they earned three important forms of recognition during the convention:
- Citrus College was one of only four schools statewide to win the "Pacesetter" award
for program excellence. This award combines a school's performance in the publication
contests with its performance in the on-the-spot contests.
- Citrus College won three important team awards: Logos magazine, the Clarion newspaper
and the Clarion website all won "General Excellence" recognition; this is the highest
overall recognition a publication can receive at the JACC level and encompasses design,
photography, writing and more. Citrus College was the only school in California to
receive "General Excellence" awards in all three categories.
- Citrus College finished with 19 individual awards – 12 from the publication contests for work published by Logos and the Clarion during the 2018 calendar year and seven from the on-the-spot contests that were held during the convention.

- Magazine opinion article: Sayedah Mosavi, first place
- Front page layout: Clarion staff, second place
- Photo illustration: Kara Elder, third place
- Magazine design: Logos staff, third place
- Inside newspaper page layout: Michael Quintero, third place; Xela Quintana, fourth place
- Webcast/broadcast news: James Duffy, fourth place
- Column writing: Brianna Sewell, honorable mention
- Infographic: Michael Quintero, honorable mention
- Feature photo: Logan Gray, honorable mention
On-the-spot contest winners:
- News writing: James Duffy, first place
- News judgment and layout: Xela Quintana, second place; John Michaelides, fourth place
- Sports writing: John Michaelides, second place; Tannan Luzzo, honorable mention
- Critical review: Lydia Egan, honorable mention
- News photo: Liandra Thibodeaux, honorable mention
Additionally, former Clarion and Logos editor Evan Solano, who now works as a page designer for the Southern California News Group, completed another term as the Southern California professional/industry representative to the JACC Board of Directors. Waleed Rashidi, a full-time tenure-track professor at California State University, Fullerton, who taught (and continues to teach) at Citrus College in an adjunct capacity, continued his role on the board as the representative of the four-year schools statewide. And James Duffy, the Clarion's editor-in-chief in the fall 2018 semester, successfully completed his one-year term as the JACC state student president, serving on the JACC board representing students statewide.
Congrats to the entire Citrus College communication program, including instructors Amber Durfield and Patrick Schmiedt, adjunct adviser Stacy Long, retired Clarion and Logos adviser Meg O'Neil, Clarion and Logos editor-in-chief Charity Wang and all of the students involved with Logos and the Clarion!
