HIST 172 · A New Class Beginning Fall 2023
History (HIST) 172 - American Environmental History is an exploration of the relationship between the natural environment and human societies living in the area now occupied by the United States, from ancient times until the present.
The course will introduce students to:
- moments of environmental change in North America
- different cultural traditions and regional patterns regarding resource use and the attitudes to the natural world
- political and diplomatic histories of environmental regulation
- the histories of disparate environmental impact and of grassroots advocacy for environmental justice
