Congratulations to Nereida Valdez, a law, public policy and society major, who recently completed her studies at Citrus College!
After graduating from Gladstone High School in 2015, Nereida enrolled at Grand Canyon University (GCU). However, she received devastating news at the end of her sophomore year that changed her academic trajectory. Her mother had been diagnosed with cancer, prompting Nereida to put her education on old and return home to help care for her family.
"My mom had the surgery she needed, but she couldn't follow up with appointments or testing because transportation was difficult to manage. So, I decided to leave GCU to care for my family during what was the most difficult time of our lives," she said. "Initially, I tried to take classes at Citrus College after moving back home. However, between my mom's appointments, taking care of my siblings, household duties and work, I ultimately decided to leave college completely."
Years later, Nereida was ready to finish what she started. "I always knew I wanted to earn my degree, but it all depended on timing," she said. "Although my mom continues her fight against cancer, I now have a stronger support system, and I realized I could delegate some of my responsibilities."
Nereida decided to reenroll at Citrus College, choosing to return to a familiar campus as she navigated the uncertainties of pursuing higher education in her late 20s. This time, she approached her education with greater confidence. "The first time I went to college I made sure to be invisible. I wouldn't meet with counselors, instructors or classmates because it was easier for me," she said. "Things are different now. I push myself to talk to others and reach out to my instructors when I need clarification on assignments."
Last month, Nereida earned her associate degree from Citrus College. She plans to continue her education at Cal State Fullerton in the fall, where she will pursue a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in legal studies. "Being from a first-generation family, it has always been my dream to attend a four-year university. I'll be earning my bachelor's degree at 31 instead of 22, and I've learned to love that about my journey."
Despite the unique path she has taken, Nereida has no regrets. "Leaving to care for my family was the best decision I could have made," she said. "Both my parents were present and got to see me walk across the commencement ceremony stage at Citrus College," she said.
Thank you for making Citrus College part of your story, Nereida! We are proud of your accomplishments and look forward to seeing what your future holds.
