The Citrus College Rocket Owls team recently won three awards at the 2020 NASA Student Launch competition:

  • Second place in Best Looking Rocket category
  • Third place in Social Media category
  • Third place in STEM Engagement category

Additionally, Citrus College ranked 15 out of 46 university teams in the yearlong competition hosted by NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2020

The Citrus College Rocket Owls recently worked with a group of Glendora Unified School District GATE students on building and flying drones, learning the basics of coding with Arduinos and building Lego robots during a three-day STEM camp that took place last week.

The participating students received certificates of completion at the end of the camp.

MONDAY, APRIL 15, 2019

Citrus College Rocket Owls computer modeling officer and payload specialist Marco Gudino was recently offered a paid summer internship by NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

The five-week NASA Lucy Mission Internship at Arizona State University is hosted by the School of Earth and Space Exploration at ASU. Marco will gain experience in complex project design and fabrication, including 3D printing, machining of designs and testing in space-like conditions.

Marco is an aerospace engineer major, and he hopes to use this opportunity to improve his teamwork and communications skills, as they will be imperative to his future in engineering. His main interests outside of school are sports, movies and music. His main hobbies are hiking and just spending time with family and friends.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 2019

The Citrus College Rocket Owls successfully launched and retrieved their rocket during the launch week activities that took place last week in Huntsville, Alabama, as part of an eight-month NASA Student Launch Program.

At the awards ceremony, the Rocket Owls received the STEM Engagement Award, which is presented to the team that best informed others about rocketry and other space-related topics. They also took home third place in the social media category, which is presented to the college or university team that has the most active and creative social media presence throughout the project year.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27, 2019

Thirteen physics students from Citrus College were selected to participate in the spring 2019 Arduino Projects internship. The students will work in teams on rocketry projects centered on the use of low-cost programmable microcomputers to collect, store and transmit in-field sensor and GPS locator data.

Besides working on these projects, the participating students will attend several webinars conducted by NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration professionals. At the end of the four-month internship, students will receive $600 stipends and certificates of completion.

This program is sponsored by the California Grant Space Consortium.

TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2019

Ivette Ayala, a member of the Citrus College Rocket Owls team, was selected to participate in the highly competitive National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored summer internship program at Cal Poly Pomona that focuses on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The program, designed to increase students' interest in UAV technologies, gives undergraduates from all over the country the opportunity to conduct research for 10 weeks during the summer on state-of-the-art technologies and advanced research projects in UAV flight dynamics and control, computer vision, artificial intelligence, embedded systems and robotics.

In addition to their research, students will participate in weekly research seminars, research meetings and professional development seminars.

The selected students will receive a stipend of $500/week for the 10-week period and a subsistence allowance including boarding and meals. The students also receive funds for travel and research supplies.
