MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2019
A group of Citrus College students in the Bridge to the Geosciences program took a break from chemistry lab work on Catalina Island this past weekend to enjoy some snorkeling.
This was a unique STEM experience with leading scientists at the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2019
Citrus College Bridge to the Geosciences students are conducting independent research in preparation for their visit to the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies on Catalina Island from Nov. 22 through Nov. 25.
The students will be conducting ocean water analyses (and there will be some snorkeling too!).
Citrus College instructor Peter Cross will take part in the research trip, which will also feature six scientists from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a geologist from Boulder and several University of Southern California graduate students.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2019
Students from the Citrus College Bridge to the Geosciences program visited the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory today. Joining them were astronomy instructor Dr. Dave Kary and counselor Raquel Gutierrez.
They're learning about planetary sciences and JPL missions, as well as how to secure internships at NASA centers, hearing career talks and networking with JPL scientists.
Great job STEM students!

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2019
Recently, several Citrus College Bridge to the Geosciences students spent time in the laboratory at the Oak Crest Institute of Science analyzing soil samples they obtained in Boulder, Colorado, last June.
Their focus was on determining what kinds of bacteria remain in soil after fires. The last photo shows colonies of fluorescent bacteria (in teal green).

TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 2019
Last week, several Citrus College students in the Bridge to the Geosciences program spent time in Boulder, Colorado, as part of Research Experience for Community College Students (RECCS), a summer internship program that gives community college students an authentic experience allowing them to explore geosciences and gain the confidence to transition to a four-year institution in STEM disciplines.
The students started their study with a geology hike in the Flatirons with Dr. Dave Kary and Dr. Alan Lester, their geology guide. They visited three burn sites in the Rocky Mountains, examining what was destroyed as well as what is alive now. They also visited a wildfire fire station to better understand what this elite group of firefighters does during burns.
Additionally, students toured the University of Colorado Boulder and met with CIRES Education and Outreach staff to discuss their summer research and goal setting. The questions they answered related to fire and fire ecology, and they analyzed data they've collected during a lesson on exploring variables.
At the conclusion of the experience, the Citrus College students learned basic research, writing and communication skills, and they presented their findings at a science symposium.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2018
A group of Citrus College students in the Bridge to the Geosciences program arrived on Catalina Island this morning via the University of Southern California's (USC) boat, the Miss Christi.
They are accompanied by three NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) scientists, two JPL interns and two USC grad students who will support their work.
Their next few days will consist of lectures in oceanography, microbial ecology and biology, field testing water samples, microscopy work with plankton, data processing and analysis, and research presentations.
This is a unique STEM experience with leading scientists.

Bridge to the Geosciences students are off to Boulder, Colorado on Sunday morning for 10 days of research, networking, learning and hiking.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16, 2022
On March 12, Citrus College STEM TRiO students participated in a day of service coupled with an introduction to field work.
Eighteen students gathered at Monrovia's Hillside Wilderness Preserve where biologist Simon Webster talked with them about the importance of studying ticks and the pathogens they carry. They received instructions for conducting fieldwork and documenting specimens.
During a 90-minute hike, the students collected two distinct types of ticks, which they were then able to view under microscopes brought to the site by the Oak Crest Institute of Science.
An impromptu visit by two park rangers, both Citrus College alumni, rounded out the day.
All ticks were donated for ongoing laboratory analyses.

The Circle of Change Leadership Experience is a national conference that empowers, inspires and equips student leaders to change the world.

Enjoying your summer, Owls? Our STEM TRiO students are!
Last Friday evening, several Citrus College STEM TRiO students attended a performance of "The Phantom of the Opera" at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Before the show, they viewed public art outside the concert hall, including Richard Serra's 65-foot, 360-ton sculpture "Connector," which is made from five torqued steel plates.
The Citrus College STEM TRiO program is designed to assist first-generation, low-income, and/or disabled students majoring in STEM and allied health fields by offering a variety of services tailored to meet their individual needs. The program helps students successfully enroll in and complete coursework, access necessary resources, prepare for transfer and build financial literacy to ensure students achieve their educational goals.
